I heard Jeannette Walls (The Glass Castle) speak this weekend. Her life has been incredible – homeless occasionally, poor always, bright, pulled herself through college and into a great job, living in Manhattan, successful career, parents living on the streets and digging through dumpsters. The thing that struck me was her perspective. The example she gave was one Christmas when her father took the kids outside and told them that they could pick any star they wanted for their present. She picked Venus – not a star, but the brightest thing out there – and he gave it to her. Her perspective? My father could give me the stars. Venus is still hers to this day. Her sister’s? Typical Dad, giving us what he didn’t own. One brings light and life, the other only darkness. The gift has completely been missed. I plan on giving my children the stars. God has already given them to me.
