As I was at Christmas mass, I saw the altar in a way that really struck me. Our church is grand in many ways, and it really shines at Christmas. But, the thing that hit me in the quiet of the night was the presentation of Jesus in all the ways He comes to us. We have the manger where He enters the world in peace, joy, and innocence. We have the cross, the looming reminder that this peace is only temporary. He has work to do, and He has come for this. We have the golden tabernacle in the back where He resides with us today, never to leave us. And finally, the altar, where we participate in the sacrifice that brings us to the doors of heaven. Christmas is about a baby, but we are reminded that it is so much more.
