What’s the Point?

Happy Mardi Gras! Ash Wednesday is tomorrow, and this is traditionally the last day to indulge before you start refraining for Lent. It’s so easy to give up the standard coffee, chocolate, between meal snacks, and then go through Lent as usual. But it can be so much more, with only a change of viewpoint. You can still give up those things, but don’t forget why you are doing it. Make a sacrifice to remind you of those who have no choice in their sacrifices. Deny a small temptation to help you know how to deny larger temptations when they come. Fast to remind yourself that even your daily bread is a gift from God, and renew your appreciation for even the smallest things in your day. Do a kind act every day to help you reorient your life from revolving around yourself to revolving around others. It’s the same things, just a little clearer vision into the purpose of Lent. If you do, your Easter will be more than just an end to the deprivations, it will be a celebration of a new life. And that’s really the point.
