A couple more DC memorial quotes this week – The MLK memorial had two walls filled with quotes from him over the years. On of my favorites is this: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” (1963) Not that there isn’t a place for self-defense, but to get to a point of light and love, darkness and hatred are completely ineffective. This is true on a global, political scale, and it is true in our personal lives. I may get someone to stop treating me a certain way through anger, but the cause is still there. It is through love and patience that things change at the core, and the core of our relationships on a racial level is what Martin Luther King was looking to change.
