Have you ever thought about the difference between joy and happiness? Joy is mentioned many times more than happiness in the Bible, and it is on purpose. I think it’s similar to sadness and depression. Sadness is related to the events around you, but depression is unaffected by immediate situations. You can be depressed and get no enjoyment from a beautiful sunset or a fun event. The same with joy and happiness. Happiness is based on the situation around you, but joy goes well beyond it. It’s pervasive and all-encompassing. Happiness can give us a glimpse, but it’s only a glimpse. Joy is something that all of us long for, and will work to find. The trick is that it is not found in what the world sometimes tells us. It’s found in what we were designed and meant to be, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit – “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Gal 5:22-23 NAB) It’s funny, but each one of these leads to the others. Try it.
