Are you helping someone or “directing” someone because you know better and they don’t? Pope Francis addressed being offensive in his chastisements and exhortations by saying that he wants to help people to be freed from “…those unworthy chains and to attain a way of living and thinking which is more humane, noble and fruitful, and which will bring dignity to their presence on this earth.” (Joy of the Gospel, 208) If we have love for the people that we are helping, we will hate the chains that bind them and will be fighting with them for their good. Otherwise, we are just fighting them and trying to create another copy of ourselves. I’d rather be on a team – it’s one of those times that it really is great if everyone wins.
