Have you ever heard or thought, “When I was younger, we did (or didn’t) do _______ in our church”? Change is so hard sometimes, and it’s amazing to think how many things change in such a short amount of time. There are modes of respect that have fallen out of favor. There are types of music that have changed. Things that are meaningful to me don’t seem to have any meaning to other people. The thing I’ve noticed is that when I continue to focus on what has changed and what used to be, I tend to miss the meaning of what is happening now. Maybe something is less formal because people are more comfortable with it. Maybe a tradition has changed to express more of what is meaningful to the people now. Maybe there is something that needs to be addressed and fixed. Either way, we can easily lose the present when it is only looked at in reference to the past.
