My favorite story about choosing a theme is one of those God moments that are really hard to chalk up to coincidence. Our team had been stalling on choosing a theme. Nothing seemed right, and we had lots of other things to talk about each time. So, one night our leader told us we weren’t leaving without a theme, and we finally came upon one that felt right. “Be not afraid… I go before you always.” (based on Deut 8:31) Now, this theme is not about what we have been working on or what we are presenting, but it is meant for the people coming to the retreat. It is God’s message to them, just as I needed just the theme for the retreat I attended. When did we decide on this theme? September 10, 2001.
