Where is God?

Sometimes people will look at September 11 and give it as proof of the absence of God. I will say that I agree with them. This is what it looks like when God is not allowed into our hearts. When our faith – whether it is in ourselves, government, Allah, God, or Jesus – is based on fear, hatred, separation, or privilege, then God is not able to come through. That’s the whole point of free will. We can choose to eliminate His influence. The results are rarely good. But when our hearts are open to hope, generosity, love, and mercy, then God’s presence is more readily seen. It is seen in the crowds of people who came to clear the rubble of 9/11. It is seen in the lines of cars at the Hungarian border bringing food and clothing to refugees. It is seen in the small efforts that become enormous because they are multiplied by hundreds of people. Yes, today we look and see what the absence of God looks like. But, then we look to ourselves and try to show the world what it looks like when He is present.
