We can have a hard time believing in God when bad things happen to good people. Most of us have a maxim that God will protect us, and when He doesn’t, when a tragedy hits closer to home that we would like, we just don’t know what to do with it. I read a quote by John MacMurray that I think helps to resolve this in a beautiful way. “The maxim of illusory religion runs: ‘Fear not; trust in God and he will see that none of the things you fear will happen to you’; that of real religion, on the contrary, is ‘Fear not; the things that you are afraid of are quite likely to happen to you, but they are nothing to be afraid of.” Quite a different perspective, but one that has the understanding that there is more to our lives that what we see and what we live. It’s one that knows that God is present in every situation we are in, not just the happy, blessed ones. It’s one that knows that what looks like the end to us is really a beautiful new beginning. Fear not.
