I served dinners to the band before football games for several years. I loved doing it, and saw it as a ministry rather than a volunteer position. Each year, there were more and more allergies to accommodate, and it was easy to be frustrated and see them as picky eaters. But, knowing several people with deadly food allergies helped me to see it differently. These kids had to opt out of everything. No cake at the party, no candy at Halloween, different lunch table, fear at a restaurant. All those “special meals” I had to order were much less a burden for me than they were for the kids who needed them. The first corporal (physical) work of mercy is to Feed the Hungry. Whether you are feeding the homeless, the band, or your family at home, this experience helped me to realize that it isn’t actually about the food. It’s about feeding the soul, and valuing the one you feed.
