Lost Presents

This weekend, our family delivered Christmas presents to a needy family. As we were heading home, we got a call from the mother – the oldest daughter didn’t have a present. Had we forgotten it, or was it not included when we picked them up from the church? Sure enough, the lone present sat under our tree at home. We had completely missed it. It was a pretty small gift, and so we went out to supplement a little bit before we delivered the wayward package. I can’t describe the delight in my children as we not only found a jewelry box like the daughter requested, but it was in her favorite color, and had a really cool way of opening. This wasn’t giving to the less fortunate because we’re wealthier, better, or have a sense of obligation. This was giving to someone out of a desire to give them joy. These are the gifts we give this year. They are gifts of love, reminding us that the greatest gift was given to us for love and love alone. We are worth it, and so are they.
