Hide and Seek

Did you pick up a little bit of hide and seek in the readings this weekend? The first reading was of God taking Abram to count the stars if he could, and promising him as many descendants. The last one was of the Transfiguration where Jesus appears on the mountain with Moses and Elijah.

In both of these readings, something beyond our experience is revealed, but there is a little something different in that first one with Abram. If you look closely, the scene happens in the middle of the day, because later in the scene the sun sets. How many stars can you see at noon? Not many. But still, Abram believed that his descendants would be numerous. The stars are there, they are just hidden by the light of the sun.

We all have moments like these. Moments where the promise is hidden but heard, and moments where it is all so very clear. Even so, both can be hard for us to trust. Did I hear what I think I heard? Did I see what I think I saw? Maybe so.
