Looking Good

Most of us think we’re doing pretty well when it comes to how we stand before God. That’s all fine and dandy, but I think we might see things differently if we actually came face to face with Jesus. Peter, who is a pretty big deal apostle, first met Jesus in his fishing boat. He had been commissioned to take Jesus out to speak to the crowd, and then told to put out to deep waters for a catch. “No, no, Jesus. We have fished all night to no avail. But, if you say so, sure.” It’s the wrong time of day, the wrong location, and a hasn’t been working before, but the boat is overflowing with the fish being brought up in the nets. In the midst of this, he realizes that Jesus is waaay more than he realized and Peter falls to his knees. “Go away from me Lord; I am a sinful man.” (Luke 5:8) The great part about this story, to me, is that Jesus already knew exactly who Peter was. He tells him not to be afraid, because He has a pretty big job waiting for him. A close encounter with God can put us face to face with who we really are, and there will always be something that we would rather not see. But in that encounter, we are given the desire and the ability to move to something greater. That’s incredible. (Luke 5:1-11)
