This “woman at the well” thing has come up for me a couple times in the last week. As a refresher, Jesus is at a well in Samaria, and meets a woman coming for water. They start talking, and she realizes that Jesus is something different, and is pretty sure that He’s the Messiah. She goes into town, tells everyone, and they invite Jesus to stay. The thing that has struck me in this story is the line at the very end. The townspeople say, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.” (John 4:42) There are times when we can only believe because of someone else’s experience. There are times when we have to trust in the faith of those around us. There are times when we believe for someone when they just can’t right then. And how wonderful it is when we can say, “we have heard for ourselves,” and pick it back up again.
