Everyone hates history. Right? Actually, we absolutely love history. Historical novels, historical movies, and even historical musicals are huge hits. So why do we hate it so much in school? I think it is because most of the time it is taught by someone who doesn’t want to teach it anyway. It’s the typical filler class for a sports coach to cover when they aren’t coaching. It’s when we get someone who is teaching it because they love it that we start to love it. It’s the same with faith. If you are teaching a class or Bible study, or just walking the faith walk with a friend, it’s pretty horrible if you are just giving facts, data, and rules. But if you love it, if you can’t wait to share it, then it’s something that they can’t wait to get for themselves. Pope Paul VI said that a person “listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he[/she] does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 41) So, are you teaching? If you’re not being a witness, don’t quit teaching, just start witnessing. The more you do it, the better you’ll get. I promise.
