As a parent, and even in this blog, I spend a lot of time building self-esteem and self-worth. “You are precious in the eyes of God” is something I believe with the core of my being and I love helping people realize that in their own lives. So, today’s verse may seem like I am contradicting myself. In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist talks about Jesus as Jesus begins His ministry. John has been a huge prophet with a large following, so when he told his followers that “He must increase and I must decrease”, it must have been a bit of a shock. John was important, he was influential, but his job was complete if he had prepared people for what was to come. In the same way, as self-confident as we are, and as much self-esteem as we have, our value is highest if, when people come into contact with us, they see Jesus more than they see us. It’s a contradiction that only makes sense the more you live it. Mother Theresa talked about this when she talked about her ministry, seeing Jesus in the poorest of the poor, and being a small pencil in the hand of God. It’s pretty amazing for everyone when it happens.
