Independence Day

On the 4th of July, we celebrate our independence as a country, and independence is a basic characteristic of our culture. As a nation, and as a people, we balk at any attempt to control us, real or imagined. Unfortunately, with God and religion, that’s an easy place to go. There are so many rules, so many requirements, so much judgment. We’re supposed to follow God’s will for us. Doesn’t that mean that we can’t do what we want? It’s easy to paint that kind of picture from the outside. But, from the inside, it is really just the opposite. God’s will isn’t like getting a job assignment from the boss so that the company does well. We don’t have follow God’s will because it is good for God, He doesn’t need us like that. We follow it because it is great for us, individually, and as a whole. Even more, we are given the absolute freedom to choose how we respond. Completely. That kind of independence is pretty radical.
