Saint Time

Many of us have an understanding of the saints as people who wrote fancy prayers, went to church a lot, and received visitors who needed spiritual advice. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, there are saints who did those things, but they were so much more. People came to them, because they had things to say that had meaning and depth. They had things to say that helped them understand who God was, and who they were. They came because they would be challenged, and because they would be comforted. So, for the rest of the summer, I’m going to dedicate my Friday posts to quotes from the saints. Some are in-your-face challenging, some are beautiful, some are insightful, and some are simple. Our first one is from St. Teresa of Avila, and I think it is so beautiful.

“There are more tears shed over answered prayers than over unanswered prayers.”

It’s those unexpected graces that just throw us. In some way, we don’t expect to be heard. We don’t expect to be answered. But, when we are, when our prayers are answered, it is usually in a way that goes beyond what we imagined. And it is overwhelming.
