As I head out to teach the chapter on Suffering from my study Be Not Afraid, I am reminded that God never leaves us alone in our suffering. We all have our crosses to bear. Sometimes small, sometimes large, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. Even His Son, Jesus had to bear a cross, but with it came help as Simon was pressed into service. As I reflected on it, I realized that Jesus is always helping us carry our crosses, but we forget to let Him help. I regularly pick up my cross and carry it on my own, rather than sharing the load and making it light.
When I do let Jesus help, it is so much better. I am filled with peace, joy, and energy where before I was stressed and overwhelmed. In fact, there are times when I have even laid down on my cross and allowed Jesus to carry me completely for a while, because I cannot take another step. I have to say, that is the best. But, then I pick it right back up again, and carry on my merry way, occasionally remembering to lay it down a little and let Jesus help. It’s hard to remember, and sometimes we just need a little reminder. Consider this yours.
