Say Yes

Virgin Mary, Annunciation, Angel Gabriel, Holy Spirit, I am the handmaid of the Lord, Jesus, Advent, Christmas, Mother of God

Annunciation (Caravaggio)

Jesse Tree Day 19: As the Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is going to bring the Savior into the world, she asks how it would happen, and then says yes to the plan. Her response is, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)

She doesn’t mull over the pros and cons. She doesn’t argue that someone else would be better suited – we’ve seen a few of those this Advent, haven’t we? She asks how this will come about, and accepts. This is where it all begins. We’ve already seen how her first action after becoming pregnant was to serve, but it started with a “yes” to God.

Mary didn’t know all the details, but she did know that this child would be great, and given the throne of David. That’s a pretty tall order for a young, lowly, unmarried girl with no power or position. She had every reason to argue that she was the wrong person. Instead, she sees that her weakness will demonstrate God’s greatness, and becomes a part of the plan. May we all be so blessed.
