Adoration of the Shepherds (The Holy Night) (Correggio)

Jesse Tree Day 20: Jesus

Everything about the story of Jesus’ birth points to who He is and what He will do. The angels announce His birth, showing His position in heaven. The shepherds come, looking for the Lamb of God who will be offered for our sins. Mary and Joseph, human parents showing His complete humanity. “He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness.” (Philippians 2:7) The wise men come to honor Him as a king. His true kingdom is in heaven.

He is born in Bethlehem, which means “House of Bread” and laid in a manger, a food trough for the animals in the stable. “I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never hunger.” (John 6:35) “While they were eating, Jesus took bread… [and said], ‘Take and eat. This is my body.’” (Matthew 26:26)

As we await the coming of our Savior, we remember that He comes in the smallest of ways, and in the most powerful of forms. He will come in the way we can receive Him, and He will come in a way that will bring us closer to Him. Tomorrow, let us come and adore.
