We all know about giving things up for Lent, but there are actually two other practices that are considered important: prayer and almsgiving or giving to the poor. Each of these practices helps us to grow in our faith, our reliance on God, and in our love for our neighbor.
If we pray, we add to what we have. Even if our faith is as small as a mustard seed, it can and will grow. There are 40 days in Lent. It’s a short enough time that we can try without being overwhelmed, but long enough to start to develop a habit.
If we are trying to build up our prayer life, by committing a few minutes each day to pray or setting aside time to read the Bible and inspirational books, 40 days gives us enough time to start to recognize God’s voice. You can’t single out someone’s voice if you have just met them. You can’t know for sure that a quote would or would not be something they would say. It is only after knowing them and hearing what they say on a regular basis that you could be fairly certain that you knew their voice. Don’t worry that you don’t hear or recognize it right away. Keep building the relationship.
