Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? Everyone asks these questions at some point in their lives. In our final reading on our light topic, we have a bit of an answer. We’ve got the call, the instructions, the effect, and the source, and now we have why.
Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”
The purpose of the lamp is to bring light. It’s not designed to block the wind or feed your family. It’s most useful when it is being used in manner for which it was designed. So are we.
Why should we bring this light to others? It is what we were made for. We won’t be fulfilled if we live any other way. It doesn’t matter if you are a flashlight or a floodlight, it just matters that you let that light shine. Time to take off the bushel basket.
