The last couple weeks, our house has been a stinky mess around six o’clock in the evening. Summer is here, and at least one child arrives home from all-day outdoor camp covered in grime, sweat, and fun.
As much as I love them, a great big hug is going to be delayed until there is some sort of cleanup. It’s always surprising to see how much stuff one little body can accumulate in a few hours. And, they never even notice it. Somehow, they don’t smell anything, and they are pretty comfortable once they have cooled off in the air conditioning.
Meanwhile, everyone around them is pretty sure that a bath is in order.
Don’t we all do this? We are so involved in the activity in front of us, that we don’t realize the dirt we are picking up. We don’t see the obstacles that line the path we are on, because we are so engrossed in the journey.
This is why we ask God to cleanse us. This is why we stop to reflect every once in a while. The path we are on may be the correct one, but we may have fallen a couple times, or had to climb over a couple obstacles that left some residue on us.
Create in me a clean heart. Help me to see where I need some extra attention. Help me to find those smudges that need some extra scrubbing. Then I can go back and continue to enjoy the journey.
