Riding the Rapids

He leads me beside still waters, Psalm 23, Amayzing Graces, Karen May, Bible verse

We were tubing down the Frio River many years ago, and our then 5-year-old daughter was going over some rapids that made her really nervous. She was bouncing her around on her tube, and she was not in control. We were a couple yards away trying to help her through, when finally we realized the solution was so much easier than we had been making it.

“Stand up!”

When she stood, the water barely reached above her ankle. All that tossing and bumping and crashing had been in just inches of water. It was when the water was deep that it was calm. In the shallows, the water made a lot more noise and the rocks got in the way, but there was nothing to fear.

Don’t you wonder how often our lives are like this? Don’t you wonder how often God is telling us to just stand up? We may feel tossed around and out of control, but in reality the water is shallow and solid ground is just inches below us. We have strength beyond what we know. We have a foundation that is more solid that anything in creation. We have armor that is stronger than anything that can be thrown at us. We have a defender who will never leave our sides.

Peter knew this as he stepped out onto the waters. Jesus knew this as Peter started to sink. May we remember this today as we take on whatever God has in store for us. This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad. No matter what.
