Under Construction

The 200 mile road to my parent’s house is paved with good intentions. Construction has been going on for at least 20 years, and it looks like it will be about 5 more at a minimum. The transportation department has even started putting up billboards that basically say, “We know this is awful. Hang in there. It will be good later.” Ouch. Unfortunately, the old needs to be removed before the new can be built. It’s a great analogy for us. We have places in our lives that may have worked for a while, but are starting to get worn, uneven, or just too small. We have places in our lives that really never worked in the first place, but we could get through them without much effort. God takes our entire lives to work on us, putting up construction cones, tearing down the old, and then replacing it with the new. The construction part can be a bit daunting. It can be frustrating and even pretty difficult. But if we are listening, if we are praying, and if we are following God’s leadings, we can say, to ourselves and to others, “We know this is awful. Hang in there. It will be good later.”
